enclosure
Parliamentary
'enclosure' took place in the late 18th/early 19th Century, which in effect was
the partitioning of land with hedges by leading local landowners. This was
effected by
petitioning parliament for an 'enclosure award'. Enclosure took place in Cottingham and Middleton in 1813.
Enclosure meant that a lot of previously common
land, where the locals would have grazed their animals, was suddenly off
bounds. In nearby Wilbarston, villagers rioted when the local landowners came in
to try and enclose the fields!
