A great site Jane.
I have traced my ancestors back to
Cottingham. I am researching Tansley, Panter & Inkle and would love to
hear from others with the same name interests. I still have many gaps to
fill.
Keep up the good work on the site.

Hello Steve,
Lovely to hear from you. There
are Tansleys and Panters in the 1841, 1881 and 1901 Censuses for
Cottingham. I couldn't find any Inkles but have found some Inkleys! There
are still Tansleys and Panters in the village that may be related
somewhere along the line.
Good luck with your research.
Regards
Jane

Hi Jane,
Thanks for your prompt response and the info.
You may be able to me resolve a conflict of info. I have been looking for
Panters in the 1841 census and Alan Clarke informed me there were none.
However, a RootsChat participant sent me census details of 2 Panter
families living in Church Lane, Cottingham. I noted that you had no
Panters listed in the 1841 census you sent me.
Are you able to check this out for me?

Steve

Hi Steve,
I actually got my 1841 Census
from Alan Clarke so I don’t have any Panters on my list either. However,
Alan has transcribed the Census from the original returns so it’s possible
he made a mistake, and there is a family of ‘Pointers’ in Church Lane.
Only one family though! Could this be them?

Hi Jane,
Very interesting information. I believe that
this is them. The name Levi is a major clue as well as all the other names
appearing in later censuses as Panter. Interestingly, the previous
information I had also included Elizabeth age 50 and Rachel age 20 in
addition to the list you supplied. The name Panter has certainly been
presented in a numbers of ways including Panther, Pantor & Painter.
Pointer is new one!!

Steve
