Hello

I've just stumbled across your splendid site. I've been doing some family history recently and have found some antecedents hailing from Cottingham. I see on your established local families list that you have a mention of the West family. This is my connection: The William West on your site had at least five children. His only (?)daughter Sarah (b Cottingham 1825 or 28) married a Parker (don't know first name - does anyone? Is this a Cottingham family?) and they had two sons: John (my great great grandfather) b Cottingham c.1846 and Charles b Cottingham c.1848. Both ended up in Staffordshire as miners or in related work (Silverdale Colliery near Newcastle under Lyme) in the 1870s.

John married my great grandmother Elizabeth at Wolstanton, Staffs in 1875.He died before 1901. Even in the 1850s his grandchildren were given West as a middle name. I wonder how they came to travel so far? Is there a canal system nearby? John Parker is listed as born in Cottingham, York (added by the enumerator) in 1891 - that red herring cost me a few weeks! Poor handwriting also sent me to Collingham, Northants!

Are there any records of the previous generation to the one above? i.e. there could be a John Parker, baker, married in Cottingham in about 1820 and he may have been born there in about 1800?

It's very nice to look at pictures of the village and find so much information.

Regards
